The Charter Members of Alpha Lambda Delta First Year Honor Society were inducted April 11th, 2010 at a very nice ceremony in the Xavier University Administration Auditorium. Parents and friends were in attendance and addressed by Dr. Loren Blanchard, Senior Vice President of Academic Affairs, Dr. Marguerite Giguette, Associate Vice President and Mr. Joseph Byrd, Vice President of Student Services. We are all very pleased with the effort our freshman made to succeed in a very trying first year of college. Program Information

The aim of this program is to provide research experiences for undergraduate students majoring in the sciences with an introduction to cutting edge research in the broad area of “Sensing and Signaling”. The team of REU investigators represents a multidisciplinary ensemble of Cell Biologists, Geneticists, Biochemists, and Biophysicists who are taking modern approaches to the analysis of how signals are perceived and transduced in myriad biological systems.

This opportunity is available to Freshman, Sophomore and Junior undergraduate science majors. REU Fellowships will be awarded to qualified students on a competitive basis. Each Fellowship will include a $3,200 stipend as well as an allowance for cost of living, travel, and research supplies. Wal-Mart's $10 Million Diplomas

Students quit college for all kinds of reasons. They can't pay; they have to work; they struggle academically. When they're the first in their families to pursue higher education, the hurdles can seem higher. Just getting to college does not guarantee success.

Numerous studies have found that first-generation students are much less likely to graduate. They enroll less prepared and less confident than their classmates whose parents have degrees, and their performance is worse, according to data from the Higher Education Research Institute and the U.S. Education Department.

There is more consensus on these disparities than there is on the solutions. The Wal-Mart Foundation is trying to change that.

We have invited students who have shown significant academic prowess in their first year at Xavier be become inducted into one of the most prestigious honor societies in the nation: Alpha Lambda Delta. Alpha Lambda Delta was founded in 1924 by the Dean of Women, Maria Leonard, at the University of Illinois to recognize academic excellence among freshmen women. One year before, Dean Thomas Arkle Clark had founded Phi Eta Sigma, an honor society to recognize academic excellence among freshmen men. Both groups operated as single sex organizations until the mid-70s when they both became coeducational in response to Title IX.

Xavier's campus has much to gain from organizing the academically advanced students to be recognized on campus as supporting and promoting good study habits, encouraging the use of academic support serves and the continued lifting academic excellence in the First Year Experience.

The DHS Summer Research Team Program for Minority Serving Institutions has research opportunities available for the Summer of 2009. This program provides a 10-week summer research experiences at DHS Centers of Excellence to early career faculty teamed with undergraduate and graduate students. U.S. citizenship is required.

Stipends plus transportation expenses to/from the internship location for faculty and students will be provided.

Follow-on funding of up to $50,000 for collaborative research between the DHS Center of Excellence and the Minority Serving Institution during the 2009-2010 academic year may be available.

Dr. Charles Nichols at Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center is submitting a National Service Foundation (NSF) grant, and would like to partner with a faculty member at Xavier in recruiting 2-3 undergraduates to volunteer a few hours/wk in his lab. The grant focuses on GPCRs, namely serotonin receptors, and the use of Drosophila as a new system to probe biological function. The projects that the students would be working on would involve observing and scoring different behaviors (learning and memory, mating, locomotor assays), learning genetics, as well as working with a graduate student and a postdoc in the lab. The grant will be submitted on January 12, 2009, and upon acceptance, we would like to have the students in the lab beginning Fall 2009. We would also then apply for additional funding to provide stipends for the undergraduates. If this is an opportunity that you would like to be a part of, please let me know. At this time, we would only need a letter of support/participation to submit along with the grant on January 12, 2009. Again, your commitment would involve selecting students that may be interested, and they wouldn't start in the lab until Fall 09.

The students will have to travel to our lab, which is located at the LSUHSC downtown campus. We're generally in the lab Mon-Fri from 9am -5pm, and most of the behavioral experiments that the students will be involved with are done 11am-4pm.

Those of you unaware of the theme of the 2008 Freshman year at Xavier University of Louisiana it is "Why New Orleans Matters". The book of the same title by Tom Piazza is your summer reading requirement. If you haven't purchased your book you can find copies at reasonable prices on Amazon.com.

Like many tragedies in life as this mother and son certainly experienced, over time it is easy to forget them. Let's not forget without first learning a lifelong lesson and using it to become a vital part of a just and humane society.

Our goal is to identify and support pioneers in the field and to stimulate and diffuse interesting and innovative thinking on solutions to poverty.

For purposes of this essay, assume the role of policy advisor to President Kagame, and consider the videos your personal briefing on his top priorities. In response, write a 2000 word essay with policy recommendations that put President Kagame’s vision into practice. The essay should use the first person, and be persuasive. The introductory sentence might even begin, “Your Excellency, I understand your vision and here are my policy recommendations.”

The CBR Summer Research Academy offers opportunities for six Xavier students to participate in hands-on active research in different laboratories at Tulane and Xavier.

Each student intern will receive a $3,000 stipend for a ten-week summer research experience which will run from June 2 to August 8, 2008. The program will end with a symposium on August 8th at which the students will give a powerpoint presentation on their work.

Nine summer undergraduate research positions are available at The University of Memphis located in Memphis, TN. We are looking for students in the following areas; engineering, physics and chemistry. Washington Center Internships on Campus..

Dr. Joe Johnston from The Washington Center for Internships and Academic Seminars will be on campus on Wednesday, March 5th. He will be available to meet with students and faculty about the Center's programs at 3:00 PM in the University Center, Room 205C. The Washington Center coordinates internships and courses for students either during the summer or the fall or spring semesters. Students work at an internship fulltime and also enroll in at least one credit bearing course. Xavier received funding from the LA Board of Regents to provide some monetary assistance to students who attend.

The Local ACS Luncheon will be held February 28th (until further notice) at Barreca's on Old Metairie Road. The charge for this elegant and delicious luncheon will be about $12.00 per person. That however is a steal considering the dinning experience would normally cost $35.00!!! So holla back...are you interested. There will also be a guest speaker at the luncheon from the Life Source Cryobank who will talk about stem cell research. Plan to attend, bring a date (and business cards), grab some lunch and learn something new.

Study Skills Workshops Offered?

Students are encouraged to take advantage of the weekly Study Skills Workshops being offered Jan. 21 through the end of the spring semester.

All UP SCHOLARS are required to attend at least one study skills workshop sponsored by the counseling center per semester.

The workshops will cover time management and other skills designed to improve academic performance.

Sessions will be held in Room 400F of the University Library at the following times:

Tuesdays 2:40 to 3:30 p.m.,
Wednesdays 1:00 to 2:00 p.m.,
Thursdays 11:00 a.m. to noon
Fridays 11:00 a.m. to noon.

There is also a MALES ONLY workshop scheduled on Mondays from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m.

Students should subscribe to a new trend..beginning now...STUDY TOGETHER!. Studying your various subjects together with your colleagues is fundamental to retaining large amounts of information and the foundation of a active learning community. Such a community will serve not only to improve comprehension but promote the course's relevance, social development, and will establish a sense of value in your collective intellectual pursuits.

What do you remember from yesterday...what your roommate said about a teacher on Facebook or what that teacher said in that 50 minute class? Each student participant will find benefit from their colleagues and may see and discuss more of the subtle connections between their art, history, philosophy and science courses

It has been said that what you actually have learned is only what you can remember after you have been taught! Work more on remembering and the teaching will benefit you all.

Welcome to the Xavier LA (LouisianA) Experience. We hope this will be a platform where you will all come to share, express yourself and support each other. Who are we...? who cares. Lets just say we are your overseers and here to help your communication and get your Freshman year off to a smooth start. Call this a home away from home where the rules and limitations you may think the University imposes on your expression can be ignored (within reason). We will monitor the comments as you post them to facilitate discussion. We will also post witticisms and thought provoking topics as well as to solicit them from you to continue the communication.

We have established a unifying theme within this year's Class of 2011. To help you become familiar with the basis of this theme we would like to introduce you to a book by Barry Schwartz, The Paradox of Choice. We will address issues raised in this book in your second semester however if you haven't already you are welcome to begin reading this. Listen to Dr. Schwartz's 20 minute lecture on the book and give it some thought.
